Students in my 7th and 8th grade IDEA class created totem pens loosly stiled after those of the Northwest Pacific Coast Indian tribes. Students were required to create a totem pole that had at least three creatures and at least one of them needed to be a traditional animal from the Northwest Pacific Coast. After baking the pens (sans ink wells) in my toaster oven, students had the choice of either painting them with craft paints or covering them in India ink and using Rub 'n Buff (a wax metallic finish). The results were beautiful!
